Getting Started

First Steps

Do I need a referral from a doctor?

No. You can contact Speech Matters directly and book an appointment without a referral. We accept self-referrals from parents, individuals, and caregivers.

How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?

If you are concerned about your child's speech or language development, trust your instincts and seek an assessment early. Common signs include not meeting speech milestones, unclear speech, limited vocabulary, or difficulty following instructions.

How long does therapy take?

Duration varies depending on the individual. Some children make rapid progress in a few months; others benefit from longer-term support. Your therapist will give you a realistic expectation after the initial assessment.

What happens at the first appointment?

The first appointment is usually an assessment session. Your therapist will take a detailed history, conduct standardised tests, observe interaction, and discuss their findings. A written report follows within 2–3 weeks.

Can I attend the session with my child?

Yes — and we encourage it. For Hanen-based therapy especially, parent involvement is central to the approach. You will learn strategies to support your child's communication at home between sessions.

What age groups do you see?

We see clients from infancy through to adults of any age. Our paediatric team works with children from birth to secondary school age. Our adult team sees adults of all ages, including elderly patients.

Do you accept Baby Bonus CDA?

About the Therapy

Clinical Questions

What is the Hanen Programme?

The Hanen Programme is a family of internationally recognised, evidence-based programmes for parents of young children with language delays. Our paediatric team is certified in It Takes Two to Talk (for language delay) and More Than Words (for autism). These programmes teach parents to become their child's primary language facilitator.

My child has been diagnosed with ASD. Can you help?

Yes. We have extensive experience working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. We use a range of evidence-based approaches including Hanen More Than Words, Floortime/DIR, PECS, and AAC, all carefully tailored to each child's individual profile and needs.

My parent has had a stroke and cannot speak. What can you do?

We provide comprehensive aphasia rehabilitation for stroke survivors. This includes speech and language therapy to rebuild communication abilities, as well as support for families on how to communicate effectively with their loved one. Home visits are available for those who cannot travel.

What is FEES / VFSS?

FEES (Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing) and VFSS (Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Study) are instrumental assessments of swallowing function. They are used when standard clinical assessment is not sufficient to determine the cause or severity of a swallowing problem. We can arrange both types of assessment.

Do you do home visits?

Yes. We offer home visits for both children and adults. This is particularly beneficial for adults with limited mobility, stroke survivors, and elderly patients. Home visits are also useful for children who are more comfortable in their familiar environment.

Ready to Take the First Step?

We are here to listen, answer your questions, and guide you to the right next step. No question is too small.
