Speech Therapy for Children in Singapore: What Parents Should Know.
Written by Speech Matters, May 2026
Parents looking for speech therapy in Singapore usually want the same things: a clear idea of cost, honest expectations about progress, and a therapist who understands children. This guide answers the most common questions families ask before booking an assessment or selecting which centre to approach.
This article focuses on children’s speech and language therapy in Singapore.

What does speech therapy help with?
Speech therapy can support children who have difficulty with speech sounds, language development, social communication, fluency, voice, or feeding and swallowing concerns. Some children need help with just one area, while others need support across several areas. A thorough assessment helps determine what is going on and what type of therapy is most appropriate. This is where experience matters.
How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?
Common signs include unclear speech, limited vocabulary, difficulty forming sentences, trouble following instructions, poor social communication, stuttering, difficulty feeding, or frustration when trying to communicate. Some children may also be difficult to understand compared with peers of the same age.
How much does speech therapy cost in Singapore?
Private speech therapy in Singapore commonly costs around $170 to $250 per session, depending on the clinic, therapist experience, session length, and whether the visit is an assessment or a therapy session. Some clinics also charge separately for written reports, school visits, or weekend appointments.
It is worth asking what is included in the fee. A lower-priced first visit may be only a consultation, while a full assessment that includes parent interview, observation, standardised testing, clinical feedback, and a written plan costs more. In many cases, a more complete assessment in the first session can save time because it helps identify the right goals earlier.
At Speech Matters, your child’s first visit is a comprehensive assessment. This means fewer visits before your child can start receiving individualized therapy.
What affects the price?
- Therapist experience and specialisation.
- Whether the appointment is an assessment, consultation, review, or therapy session.
- Type of assessment
- Session length.
- Whether written reports are included.
- Location and travel time for home or school visits.
- Weekend or evening availability.
Why parents should look beyond the session fee?
The lowest hourly price is not always the best value. If therapy is not targeted to the child’s real needs, families may spend more time and money without seeing meaningful progress. The better question is not only “How much is one session?” but also “What is the approach, is it evidence-based, how is progress measured, and how will we know if therapy is working?”

Why does therapist experience matter?
Experience matters because children do not always present in a simple or textbook way. A therapist with more clinical experience may be better able to identify patterns, adjust the session when a child is uncooperative or anxious, and decide when a different therapy approach is needed.
At Speech Matters, children are seen by senior therapists and cases are discussed as a team. That means therapy planning is not based on one person’s view alone. Team discussion can help refine goals, improve consistency, and reduce the chance of overlooking important details.
How long does speech therapy take?
There is no honest way to predict the exact length of therapy before seeing a child. Progress depends on the child’s needs, the type of difficulty, how often sessions happen, and how much home practice is done.
Most children make noticeable progress in a few months. Others need longer-term support, especially if there are co-existing developmental, language, hearing, learning, or social communication needs. After an assessment, a therapist should be able to explain the likely therapy focus, what progress might look like, and what the family can do at home.
What speeds up progress?
- Regular attendance. This is generally overlooked.
- Short daily home practice. This is a major contributor to progress
- Parent involvement. Parents and caregivers play significant roles in helping to carryover therapy tasks during the week.
- Coordination with teachers or caregivers where relevant. Everyone who interacts with the child is potentially able to help reinforce therapy goals when interacting with the child
Schedules
Many families prefer appointments after school, and weekend sessions. Weekends are best as parents are likely to be able to attend, and learn about what is done during therapy and how to carry out these tasks at home. However, parents tend to load weekends with a number of different learning activities. This overloading of schedule may be counterproductive as children may be too tired to learn. Consider spreading out activities. Therapy sessions are also available on weekdays, after school.
At Speech Matters, most children’s sessions are scheduled after school, and Saturday morning appointments are available at selected locations. Typical availability may include Monday to Friday, and Saturday mornings, subject to availability. Weekend and after-school slots fill quickly, so it is best to enquire early if those times are important for your family.
Can therapy be done in school?
In some cases, yes. School-based speech therapy can be helpful because the therapist can observe the child in a natural environment and coordinate with teachers where appropriate. This is especially useful when a child needs support with classroom communication, participation, or carryover of therapy goals into school routines.
If you are considering school-based therapy, speak with the school principal, SEN officer, or relevant school contact first. If the school is open to external therapy services, the arrangement can often be discussed further.
Speech Matters has been engaged by MOE schools since 2008. We are also providing in-house speech therapy intervention at an international special education school.
How do I book an appointment?
To book an appointment, contact Speech Matters and share your child’s age, your main concerns, your preferred clinic location, whether you need after-school or weekend timing, and whether you are looking for assessment, therapy, or a school-based service.
If you are enquiring about Orchard, East Coast, or Farrer Road, mention your preferred location when you contact us.
What happens at the first appointment?
The first appointment usually starts with a parent interview (which can be done prior to the visit, or doing the visit), followed by observation and assessment. The therapist should explain what was found, what may be affecting your child’s communication, and what the next steps are.
A good assessment does not just identify a problem. It should give you a practical plan, including therapy goals, whether therapy is recommended, and what you can do at home to support progress.
Here are some FAQ parents ask.
How soon should I start?
If you are concerned about your child’s speech, language, or communication, it is usually better to assess sooner rather than wait and hope the issue resolves on its own. Early assessment can clarify whether your child needs therapy or simply monitoring.
Can parents sit in?
Yes, we strongly encourage parents attend and sit in the sessions. Children usually make better progress when parents understand the goals and know how to practise at home. Therapy works best when the child’s family and therapist are working toward the same outcome.
My child is not ready to sit for a long time, especially at the table.
For very young children and children who are learning to do work on the table, play based therapy is recommended. Therapy is conducted in a fun manner, incorporating play development. In short, not being able to sit at a table to learn should not limit your child’s participation in therapy.

Does my child need to be able to imitate sounds before therapy can begin?
No, that is not a pre-requisite for starting therapy. Therapy is recommended for children whose communication development is lagging that of typical peers. Our experienced therapists would be able to curate an individualized plan for your child to start where he / she is.
